Director, People and Organisational Development

Sarah Martyn looks to attract and retain the best talent to Hendy and ensure they have fulfilling careers. The family-owned group has a strong reputation for loyalty and employee retention, including more than 140 members of the 25 Year Club – those who have been at Hendy more than 25 years.

Sarah started her career direct from university at IT company Computacenter, becoming Head of HR. Much of her career has been in IT & Telecoms, mostly as a senior consultant working for progressive blue-chip companies such as Ericsson, Hitachi, MLL Telecom, Three and Horizon Nuclear Power – often involved in restructuring, acquisitions and business transformation.

Working for a number of companies during a successful 19-year consultancy career has enabled Sarah, ‘to look through a different lens. I encourage colleagues to seek external references and develop a breadth of experience outside what may be familiar.  This means that we can better create an environment that is diverse and encourages innovation and creativity, which is essential in an ever-changing employment landscape and key to achieving future ambitions. After all, it is not enough to be better than the rest, you must be different from the rest.”

Sarah joined Hendy in 2019. She has introduced significant HR changes to ensure Hendy continues its growth plan in what is an increasingly competitive, fast-changing environment while reflecting the culture and value of its people. ‘There’s a strong link between colleague engagement, customer experience and business performance – so our people sit at the heart of what we do. Our evolving proposition recognizes what is important today to colleagues at different stages of their career with an emphasis on learning and development, well-being support and ways of working that support family life, as well as good financial rewards.’

The Hendy Academy was initially set up with a focus on sales but now provides development for all colleagues from early careers through to leadership.

‘We want to ensure that people don't just look to Hendy for a job, they look to Hendy for a career.’
